Establishing a niche in photography is not an easy task in Kenya given the fact many photographers are opening shops in every corner of the city. And there’s a joke that’s doing rounds on WhatsApp groups claiming that if you throw a stone in town, it will end up hitting a photographer, a Dj or a makeup artist. An upcoming photographer is on a mission of taking fitness photography in Kenya to another level – Sam Mutembei. To a common mwananchi, fitness photography in Kenya does not seem like a lucrative field because most people don’t actually take photos with their shirts and pants off, but this guy is determined to shift the narrative and build a strong fitness culture in the country which is enhanced through photography and video.
“Most photographers take beauty and event shots. But I want to be a different kind of photographer who specializes in fitness photography because it cuts across everything e.g beauty, editorial, gym and many more. To add on that, fitness photography encourages men to be captured since every man’s strong point offers a good bragging right….it’s true though. I seek to help people appreciate their body through photography. Above all, I love fitness.” Sam Mutembei, the founder and CEO of Creative Lab Africa commented.
