Safaricom hands over more than KES.4.7 million worth of scholarships to vulnerable students – Ndoto Zetu

Safaricom has handed over KES.4.7 million worth of secondary school scholarships to benefit 100 students from disadvantaged background across the country.

The telco through its Foundation collaborated with the Ministry of Education for this initiative following Cabinet Secretary Amb. Amina Mohamed’s request on behalf of the ministry in line with government commitment to achieve 100% transition of students from primary to secondary schools.

Safaricom Chief Customer Officer Sylvia Mulinge addresses Cabinet Secretary
Ambassador, Dr. Amina Mohamed and her team, on the successes of Safaricom’s
Ndoto Zetu and their contributions as private sector to the success of education in
Kenya.

“Access to quality education is hampered by financial constraints facing most parents countrywide. In an effort to remedy this, we are seeking support from various partners to ensure that all students who sat for their KCPE 2018 exams transition to secondary schools,” Amb. Mohamed said.

Earlier this year, Safaricom offered to support another 100 students from disadvantaged backgrounds who joined form one in various schools across the country. As part of Ndoto Zetu initiative, the telco has committed to sponsoring 18 girls throughout their secondary school education.

Additionally, through the M-PESA Foundation Academy, Safaricom is supporting 700 students in Form 1 to 4 with full scholarships.

“Supporting education is a commitment we have made as part of the UN Sustainable Development Goals which we subscribe to. We believe that we should not leave anyone behind in access to quality education, ensuring inclusive and equitable opportunities for all; transforming lives one student at a time,” said Sylvia Mulinge, Chief Customer Officer, Safaricom.

Ndoto Zetu is a Community Social Investment initiative launched in January this year to support dreams Kenyans have for their communities. Safaricom will fulfill 500 dreams across the country. So far, 100 dreams have been fulfilled.
