Kenya Reinsurance Corporation/Kenya Re has called for increased investment and financing cohorts among people living with disabilities to assert the disadvantaged group within the country’s economic development framework while improving their formerly low-slung livelihoods. The firm made this announcement during its NIKO FITI – Ability beyond Disability event in Kisumu held at the Tom Mboya Labour College.

The occasion saw beneficiaries from Siaya, Kisii, Nyamira, Migori, Vihiga and Bondo counties receive 70 mobile vending units, 75 canes, 75 slates, 75 stylus and 75 packets of adult diapers. The event held at Tom Mboya Labour College in Kisumu County was presided over by Kenya Re ’s Managing Director, Mr. Jadiah Mwarania. Also present was the National Chairman, Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK) Mr. Fred Owako and Director, Mr. Gideon Muga.

In partnership with (APDK) the Niko Fiti Kisumu edition was preceded by a one day intensive training for the mobile vending units’ beneficiaries covering existing policies on disabilities, group dynamics and the importance of persons with disabilities initiating disabled persons organizations for advocacy support. Other topics covered were leadership and governance, financial management, entrepreneurship skills, budget planning and monitoring progress for business growth.

The 32 Million shillings CSR project is informed by the statistics that over 3.4 % of Kenya’s total population lives with a form of disability. A survey conducted in 2007 by The National disability survey for persons with disability revealed that the most prevalent disability was physical followed by visual impairment, 50.4% of women had some form of disability as compared to men. Diseases were found to be the main cause of disability which stood at 19% followed by congenital at 14%, accidents at 12% and other causes.

The research also identified the rural areas as having a larger population of persons with disabilities with about a quarter of disabilities in those places. 25% of persons with disabilities experience moderate difficulties which results in restriction to daily living activities. Niko Fiti Na Kenya Re has this year empowered the lives of over 1000 beneficiaries in Nairobi, Mombasa, Eldoret and Kisumu counties.

Speaking at the event, Kenya Re ’s Managing Director, Mr. Jadiah Mwarania said the 2016 CSR Initiative aimed at protecting and ensuring the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities.

“The country is currently experiencing favorable investment climate championed by an aggressive private sector, we want PWDs to be part of this positive story.  With the training offered we hope that we will inspire individual and investment group programs that will explore ingenious funding ideas to subsequently help people with disability and their families combat poverty and access greater support to plan for the future.”

This event marks the final leg of the 2016 NIKO FITI – Ability beyond Disability Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative with over 1000 beneficiaries from Nairobi, Mombasa, Eldoret and Kisumu County receiving the mobility and assistive devices.
